About Koko-en
The garden was constructed in 1992 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the Himeji municipality.
Himeji Koko-en is composed of 9 separate gardens, making use of the exact former site of where Nishi-Oyashiki and other samurai houses once existed. The original location was confirmed through seven archaeological excavations. The 9 gardens each have their own theme. Oyashiki-no-niwa, the garden of the lord with a big pond including waterfall and ‘natural’ spring. Nae-no-niwa, garden of seedlings .Cha-no-niwa, tea ceremony garden. Nagare-no-hira-niwa , flatly landscaped garden .Natsuki-no-niwa, garden of summer trees. Matsu-no-niwa, garden of pine trees. Nagaya-mon, traditional style garden. Hana-no-niwa; garden of flowers. Tsukiyama-chisen-no-niwa; the garden with a hill and pond. Take-no-niwa, bamboo garden. Payment Accepted:

May 2, 2009 This place has a few wonderful spots plus the Himeji castle in the background makes for some gorgeous views. I thought the tea garden was a bit disappointing but then again maybe it looks a lot better if you're inside the tea ceremony house where you can enjoy your green tea and Japanese sweet for 500 yen. There are some benches where you can sit and relax but beware that these are also the only places you are allowed to smoke, so great view, terrible stench. There were a lot of people when I was there but compared to the castle it was quiet. ![]() Jennifer L.
