War memorials and even outlandish company tombs for major Japanese corporations (Kirin Beer, Nissan, Toyota) are also in evidence. Payment Accepted:
Getting there:
If you come out the doors of the tourist information centre, turn left and follow the road. Watch for signs. You'll eventually reach a fork in the road, where the sign says to go right (uphill), but go left (downhill) instead to reach the entrance.

Nov 1, 2009 It was my favourite place in Japan. I like to feel the more hundreds years memories in the air. I like the stone graves with moss on them, under the 20 meters trees. You can follow the path or just walking around the hill to find the most peaceful point. I offer the dawn, when the sun is rising and there aren't many people around. Just you, the stones, the trees, and the faith. Dec 14, 2008 Okunoin is a huge graveyard which houses the mausoleum of Kobo Daishi, who founded Shingon Buddhism. It is considered one of the holiest places in Japan. You reach the town by cablecar and can stay in a Monastery. The town itself is very small but there is so much to see, Okunoin being a highlight. I just wish I'd seen it at night with all the lamps lit. Related Links
