Fushimi Inari-Taisha
About Fushimi Inari-Taisha
Located about 2km southeast of Kyoto station, Fushimi Inari Taisha is without doubt the largest and most impressive Inari shrine in Japan.
Fushimi Inari Taisha was founded in the 8th century by the Hata family and is the head shrine of no less than 30,000 Inari Shrines nationwide. The sancturay is composed of several buildings, including the Sakura-mon Gate and Go-Honden Shrine followed by a 4km tunnel made of thousands of red torii gates making their way through the woods. Sep 5, 2008 Fushimi-inari is the fox shrine on the Keihan train line on the way from Osaka to Kyoto. I recommend spending a whole day here. It is a wonderful chance to go for a hike up the side of a mountain in Japan and yet stay close to hotels and restaurants. Fushimi-inari is a shrine at the base of a mountain covered with trees and wildlife. Businesses have made contributions to the shrine because it is said to give good luck, and in turn the shrine has set up tori (gateways) for each along the mountainside. They are very close together at the beginning and then further apart the higher up you go. They are painted a bright orange/red color. Don't be fooled! You may think that you won't be able to escape the city or people. The city does not extend onto the side of this mountain, and as for the people, most of them will only walk a short ways up the mountain. If you travel the whole area, you will be quite alone, with no city in site. Further up the mountain there are some graves and beautiful rocky areas. It is very safe, as wood beams have been used to make steps, although these become fewer the further up the mountain you go. When you start to go up, remember! Usually people's front leg muscles are more used and developed than the back leg muscles. You will find out how in shape you are on the way down! It is definitely something to consider when deciding how far up you wish to climb. That is why I recommend spending the full day at Fushimi-inari. Spend the time to really see one shrine rather than trying to fit in as many as possible, and not be able to distinguish between them. Use the morning and day to hike - and if you want to do the whole mountain, it will take all day. Then go to a local restaurant and relax afterwards. Kyoto also has a good number of public baths that can sooth your sore muscles. Enjoy! Jul 16, 2008 A very beautiful shrine placed on a shinto sacred mountain called Inari. You can go trekking up and down the mountain, through impressive corridors of toris. There are also a great amount of little shrines all over the area. The easiest way to reach Fushimi Inari is taking the JR line to Nara from Kyoto ands stop at the JR Inari Station, just 5 minutes away from Kyoto Central Station. Nov 3, 2009 It's amazing! Just walking up and down. And among the torii gates. It's especially good it's shining, then you can see the colour and the shape of these in the forest. I got lost, but usually it doesn't happen...just I like the unknown path...but finally I found another shrine. :o)
