Located here since the late 12th century, Kyoto Gosho (Kyoto Imperial Palace) is one of the imperial palaces of the emperor of Japan, though never the official residence.  The palace is open to the public for tours.

The Emperor used to live there in the 17th C. It's huge with 6 gates; a gate was just used by the imperial family and their guests. The Palace is divided into several buildings: waiting room, ceremony room and the room where the enthronement used to take place. Outside of this building there is a cherry tree (which is the national symbol of Japan) and a lemon tree (which is a symbol of good luck) on both sides. There are also breathtaking gardens

Beautiful city. It's unlike the other Japanese cities, with temples scattered through the streets and hidden behind or next to big department stores or shops. And there are stunning temples to visit if you take a short drive out.
