This enormous shrine complex consists of over a dozen Buddhist and Shinto buildings and structure surrounded by beautiful forest hills.  Originally built on it's own, the Toshogu itself is the mausoleum of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the first shogun of the Tokugawa shogunate, which ruled Japan for over 250 years until 1868 (Ieyasu died in 1616).  The Toshogu was later agrandized during the first half of the 17th century by Ieyasu's grandson Tokugawa Iemitsu, turning the site into the spectacular complex seen today.  Toshogu means "sunlight" and the complex's numerous gates, halls and structures are lavishly decorated and brightly colored. Hundreds of intricate wood carvings line the interiors and exteriors of these buildings in ways not seen elsewhere in Japan (where shrine architecture has traditionally favoured sleekness & simplicity)

It is the mausoleum of Tokugawa Leyasu, one of the best known Shoguns who was able to unify Japan and to protect it against invasions. Peace reigned during his period. This shrine is a world heritage and it is best known for its gate "The Yomeion Gate" with its 500 carvings. Inside there's a 3-storey pagoda and it's a mixture of Buddhism and Shintoism. There's a stable with 3 horses, which are given as a gift from Newsy land. Above the stable there are carvings that depict monkeys' life.
The shrine is awesome with its diversity and luxurious carvings

The singular most decorated and extravagant shrine in Japan with the exception of kinkakuji in Kyoto. Absolutely a must see. Centrally located in the temple UNESCO area of Northern Nikko, really easy to explore and appreciate without a strong Japanese vocabulary.

Amazing - completely worth the trip. You go up a looong flight of stairs and find this beautiful mausoleum for Tokugawa Ieyasu, surrounded by old mossy trees.

Designed by Ieyasu Tokugawa. According to study, it is the strongest power spot (nature healing) in japan.
