Aug 2, 2008 The Meiji Shrine was a terrific place to see-- if the Tokyo smog starts to get to you, head this way-- it has a series of gravel paths through thick woods, right in the midst of the rest of the city. It's really a breath of fresh air and the difference is kind of surreal. There were two shinto weddings going on while I was there-- with all the formalities its really like stepping back in time. When you leave be sure to go to harajuku to really appreciate the serenity you just left behind-- there are usually some really odd street performers right outside the gate! Sep 28, 2008 The shrine was one of the most serene and beautiful attractions I saw in Tokyo. It was hard to believe that we were in the middle of such a large and busy city. The air was calm and peaceful, and it was an amazingly relaxing break in the middle of our day. Oct 22, 2011 As a japanese in Tokyo, it's like a place that you're too familiar with that you never bother to actually go. But it's nice, it has the feel of a forest within Tokyo. It's you're standard shinto shrine. Nothing exciting, but some serene quiet can be had. Mar 18, 2012 You should visit this shrine when you visit Tokyo. In the backyard park, you can see beautiful cherry blossoms. But you cannot drink alcohol in the park because it is a sacred place.
