Nov 10, 2009 Coooool! It was great to travel by Shinkansen. I felt in an airplane. It's fast, comfortable, nice.....and once they showed the speed: 288km/h. But we couldn't feel it. Amazing! Every shinkansen has a fantasy name. The fastest: Nozomi. Unfortunately the Japan Rail Pass doesn't valid for this...but we had were lucky. Our train was cancelled, and we got ticket for the next train, and it was Nozomi. But there wasn't any difference. I don't write the other's name, there are some, but you can read here: guide.com/e/e2018.html-http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2018.html . Most shinkansen and limited express trains carry non-reserved (jiyu-seki) and reserved (shitei-seki) seats, while a few carry reserved seats only. Seats in green cars are often all reserved. On most local, rapid and express trains all seats are non-reserved. Seat reservations cost roughly 300 to 700 yen, but are free with the Japan Rail Pass (Just go to the ticket office, show your JR pass and the train number and departure, and say: reserved ticket. :o) You get it immediately. .
