Kawagoe Castle Honmaru Goten
About Kawagoe Castle Honmaru Goten
Kawagoe Castle was initially built in 1457. When Tokugawa Ieyasu set up his new government in Edo, the castle's strategic importance grew as a defense point north of the capital. 21 lords from various clans, all closely allied with the Tokugawa Shogun, resided at Kawagoe Castle during the Edo Period.
The only surviving building is the Honmaru Goten, the castle's innermost palace building and the lord's residence. It was built in 1848, only 20 years before the end of Japan's feudal age. Its spacious tatami rooms, pretty gardens and toilets are open to the public for viewing. Payment Accepted:

Nov 6, 2009 It was renovated in 2007. Since everything in Japanese traditional buildings is made of highly flamable materials (wood, rice paper and straw tatami mats). Among others you find here: originally kitchen, Shokun room with gold wall (!), main part of the building is taken up by a super long O-Hiroma reception hall.
