Dejima is the old site where the Dutch were forced to live on a manmade island in Nagasaki Harbor. This was the only "foreign" trade allowed during Japan's long isolation period. The Chinese also had an island nearby. Because of land reclamation, the area is now part of the city, but there are reconstructed buildings, models and old streets. Nagasaki also has one of the best Chinatown districts in Japan. Great food (champon, kasutera) great views from the cable car ride and much more.

This is a great place to walk around during the day, but especially at night. It's the old area that the foreigners lived, so it has a bit of the western touch - in a Japanese way. It's all lit up at night and looks beautiful.

a nice piece of Dutch history in Nagasaki. 400 years of trade between Japan and the rest of the world was through this Dutch settlement in Nagasaki.
