Oct 26, 2010 Miyajima is a sacred island for both Buddhists and Shintos. Only 2000 persons live on this island. Upon landing there you’ll be surprised by the orange Itsukushima shrine which stands majestically amid water. The shrine is 16m high. Deers, which are considered as sacred messengers of god in Shintoism, wander freely on the island. It’s called the floating shrine because you can see long corridors supported by wood pillars above the sea. There’s also a five-storey pagoda. Related Links
