Feb 28, 2011 'Onsen' (hot spring bathing) is a must-do experience in Japan's volcanic islands. There are all sorts of onsen resorts in Japan, but Fukushima area is one of the best because it's COLD up there in winter. There is something delicious about sitting in natural thermal waters, with a cup of hot sake, looking out onto a snow-covered hillside and breathing in fresh, icy air. By the end of your stay, you will feel totally relaxed and rejuvenated. Onsen food is some of the best in Japan - art on a plate; almost too beautiful to eat. There are mountain hiking trails and ski slopes in the area - you will need appropriate gear. Experience The Other Japan, the way the Japanese do it.
