Wadi Rum is a protected area covering 720 square kilometers of dramatic desert wilderness in the south of Jordan. Huge mountains of sandstone and granite emerge, sheer-sided, from wide sandy valleys to reach heights of 1700 meters and more. Narrow canyons and fissures cut deep into the mountains and many conceal ancient rock drawings etched by the peoples of the desert over millennia. Bedouin tribes still live among the mountains of Rum and their large goat-hair tents are a special feature of the landscape.

While driving through Wadi Rum at break-neck speeds on the back of a jeep that barely looked like it had all of it's necessary parts, I can't say that I felt very much like Ben Hur! But seeing the landscape and the scenery I can completely understand why they filmed the movie here. It's truly stunning. The masses of rock and hills jutting out of the desert are gorgeous and kind of surreal! We hiked some killer sand dunes, climbed a lot of big rocks, and drove until I thought we'd make it back home to Canada, and it just kept on getting more and more amazing as the day went on.

We spent a night in a tent village in Wadi Rum as well, and despite the fact that we slept through one of the only rain storms they get each year, it was such a great experience! (and the food was delicious!).

A Bedouin took us around in a four wheel drive. The desert is fabulous, the sand is not smooth and there are some beautiful rocks that stand majestically in the wilderness. The way is quite rough. Then we stopped near a big rock and the driver asked us to climb the rock and watch the sunset. It was marvelous. Suddenly, the sun was lit up by the moon and stars. The desert, the wind, the view, the quietness and the glittering sky take me to an exceptional place.
Lawrence of Arabia by Omar el Sheriff was filmed in Wadi Rum.

I spent one night and the better part of two days in the Wadi Musa Desert. My companions were two very nice Asian students and our Bedouin guides. The beauty of the desertscape was ever changing and fantastic. As the sun traversed the sky our world continued to change. As our day was taken by the night, it appeared as though the heavens would consume us all. It was a tremendous experience. Good Journeys!

Can anything be more silent than being in the middle of a desert? Red, White and Black sand dunes. Beautiful formation of rocks. Calm and hipnotic ride at the back of a camel. Centuric sketches of the old world fighting for water and food. Hundreds of years old of unmarked graves possibly belonged to a mass exodus from egypt? And the simplicity of life of a bedouin. Would you stay meditate in this sea of sands just to understand the sound of a whisper?

This desert was the best in our Jordan round journey! If you go there by local bus, just gi throught the Visitor Center, and ahter there's a village, you can buy trip. Much! more cheaper, than a travel agency sells it! And we bargained for the half price, it's true it was more than half an hour.... :o)
