Christmas Island
About Christmas Island
Christmas Island (also known as Kiritimati and not to be confused with the Australian territory of the same name) is the world’s largest coral atoll at 388 sq. km in size. It was discovered by Captain James Cook in 1777, but was not inhabited until the middle of the 19th century. It has a desolate landscape of salt flats and coconut farms, but is also known for having a very diverse array of marine life and seabirds. The seabird sanctuary is considered to be one of the best in the world and is home to millions of seabirds. Christmas Island is primarily visited though for its offshore fishing and lagoon bonefish fishing.
