Tarawa Atoll in Kiribati was the site of a major World War II battle in late 1943.  Around 20,000 US Marines stormed the beaches around Betio and defeated the Japanese forces after several days of heavy fighting.  There are many war artefacts such as bunkers and vehicles scattered throughout the atoll.  Some highlights include the artillery guns and bunkers near Betio and the Betio Memorial at the cemetery.  There is also a decaying Sherman tank lying in the water near Red Beach 2, and a Japanese tank in the water by the Japanese command bunker.  Other bunkers and memorials are nearby, although a guide may provide additional knowledge and perspective.
