Aug 14, 2009 The most relaxing place in Laos. Known as '4000 Islands' Si Pan Don is a mass of small islands near the border of Laos and Cambodia. I've been to three of these Islands. Don Khong : The Big Island and the only one to be connected to the electricity grid. As a result you'll find the best accommodation in the region here. Not as popular as some of the other islands but worth a visit. There is some trekking to be done and a bike ride around the island is both exhausting and rewarding. The countryside is mostly very pretty although some areas are quite polluted. Despite this, the people (as everywhere in Laos) are very friendly and where ever you go you'll be followed with a shower of 'Sabaii Dii '. Don Dhet : Accommodation here is pretty basic, but people don't come here for luxury. It's a little bit of a party island (compared to the others anyway) and there is a fear that it will go the same way that Vang Vieng did. The scenery is just beautiful though! The best thing to do here is find a place with a hammock and have a beer lao or five. Don Khon : There is a bridge connecting Don Khon with Don Dhet . Near the bridge there are mildly interesting remains of an old french rail-line (the only one in Laos) and an old engine. Don Khon is where the main natural attractions are, including a few waterfalls, some nice cycling paths and a chance to see some rare dolphins. Don Khon tend to have a more 'Lao' feel than Don Dhet. Nov 15, 2008 beautifull islands on the mekong river where it's possible to see dolphins...
