Saida means fishing. It’s one of the oldest cities in the world, about 6,000 years. It was a Phoenician city and a famous port. It was conquered by the Persian, Roman, Byzantine…Saida is famous for its Castle of the Sea which was built by the crusading Knights of St. John of the Hospital of Jerusalem . Saida was mentioned in the bible and Jesus and his disciples used to visit it and go fishing in its sea. Nowadays, Saida is still keeping its old style and traditional manufacturing. Thus, you can visit Khan el Sabun (they manufacture soap in the traditional way), Khan el Franj, the Great Mosque. You can also walk along its very old Souk where you see craftsmen making traditional handicrafts.
