Trakai Castle was built starting in the 14th century and is notable for its red bricked Gothic architecture.  It is located on its own island in Lake Galve and served as a royal residence after the defeat of the enemy Teutonic Order negated its strategic importance in the early 15th century.  It fell into ruin after the wars with Muscovy during the 17th century, but was later restored during the 20th century in a 15th century style.

The Castle contains a City and Castle History Museum that has exhibits on the history of the town of Trakai (a former capital) and Lithuania.   You can also see displays of artifacts found at Trakai and the surrounding area.  The ticket is also valid for the 30 meter high brick watchtower.   There are also opportunities to practice archery and target shooting on the castle grounds.

This is a beautiful area of the world. I visited there some 14 years ago with my grandmother as its where my grandfather was born. I remember there being nothing but lakes and little Islands. The castle is beautiful but there are also some beautiful little churches, one of which is where my grandfather was christened. Its worth a visit and am sure you can now find plenty of info about it on the net so you can see for yourself exactly how great it is.

Trakai Castle is the obious place to go in Trakai for a reason. This fairytale castle is the real deal. Red brick walls, towers, moat drawbridge - it's all there and it's all real. Built in the 15th century and in use at least into the 19th, the castle was the foritifed seat of assorted Dukes and other Lithuanian nobles. It sits on an island in the middle of a beautiful lake. In the spring sunshine it seems to glow.

Trakai castle is simply wonderful!!
A fully preserved (rebuilt) medieval castle, that hosts a cute little museum on Lithuanian history, with some interactive consoles too. Just for the view alone, it is worth the visit! Don't forget to eat traditional Karaites food at the restaurants around the lake!

Great looking castle located on the island on the lake. When you come inside the castle you'll probably notice the parts of the castle were rebuilt some time ago, so it's not all medieval, still it's a very nice place to see.
