straddles the mountainous border between the southwestern Republic of Macedonia (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Republic_of_Macedonia" title="Republic of Macedonia" style="text-decoration: none; color: rgb(6, 69, 173); background-image: none; background-attachment: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial; background-color: initial; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial; ) and eastern Albania (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Albania" title="Albania" style="text-decoration: none; color: rgb(6, 69, 173); background-image: none; background-attachment: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial; background-color: initial; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial; ). It is one of Europe (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Europe" title="Europe" style="text-decoration: none; color: rgb(6, 69, 173); background-image: none; background-attachment: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial; background-color: initial; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial; )'s deepest and oldest lakes, preserving a unique aquatic ecosystem with more than 200 endemic species that is of worldwide importance. [ 1 ] (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lake_Ohrid#cite_note-0" style="text-decoration: none; color: rgb(6, 69, 173); background-image: none; background-attachment: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial; background-color: initial; white-space: nowrap; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial; ) The importance of the lake was further emphasized when it was declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UNESCO" title="UNESCO" style="text-decoration: none; color: rgb(6, 69, 173); background-image: none; background-attachment: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial; background-color: initial; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial; ) in 1979. However, human activity on the lake shores and in its catchment area is resulting in the ecosystem coming under stress.

It's so beautiful! The whole area has a calming effect. Great lakeside restaurants with fresh seafood. Great guesthouses and hotels all around the lake. Lots of opportunities for a boat/cruise ride on the lake. A must see if you're in the area.

The palce is worth seeing and spending some 3-4 days. After some longer time it's getting soooo boring. But, for those who love clear water and mountains the place is like heaven ;)
