Sandakan Memorial Park
About Sandakan Memorial Park
Sandakan Memorial Park lies on some of the grounds of the original prisoner of war (POW) camp from WWII where the Japanese held more than 2000 Australian and British troops. The area is famous for the Sandakan "Death Marches" in which the Japanese marched prisoners about 250km over rough terrain. None of the prisoners from here survived the death marches or move to other camps in 1945, however 6 Australians did escape. The site marks one of the great tragedies of war and offers an impressive amount of historic photos and stories.

Apr 30, 2010 Not knowing anything about the Death Marches prior to arriving in Sandakan I was hugely impressed with the site and information at this museum. Especially after trekking through the Borneo jungle you can only imagine how harsh the conditions must have been for prisoners who once were held here and died.
