La Dune Rose, or 'the Pink Dune' is located directly across the Niger from Gao and can be clearly seen from the city. It is heralded as Gao's premier tourist attraction and can be reached by pirogue which is easily organized in town. During the day the dune is a pinkish sort of colour but at sunset it becomes truly magical. You can only reach the dune itself when the water levels are high enough (usually between September and February)

I think this was one of the best things I did in Mali. The pirogue trip out across the Niger was peaceful and pleasant and the dune itself was fantastic. I know that Gao is a long way from anywhere but if you do make it out then this is definitely worth a look.
