The Tomb of Askia was built in 1495 by Askia Muhammad Toure and he was entombed here upon his death.  The tomb is a functioning mosque but tourists are welcome to come in and look around (for an entrance fee).  It is also possible to climb to the top of the tomb for views over Gao and the Niger.

I think the Tomb is well worth a visit if you're in Gao. Unless you're really into architecture it's probably not worth going to Gao simply to see it but once you're there it's definitely worth a look.
