The Niger River doesn't actually flow into Timbuktu itself, you need to go out to the port at Korioume if you want to take a boat trip. A boat trip ion the Niger is an essential part of any trip to Mali, and the section from Timbuktu to Mopti is one of the most impressive.

The Niger is the lifeblood of Mali and is still used as a major trading route (which is completely understandable as soon as you see the roads!). Given the choice between a three day cruise on the Niger, or a rough, bumpy, long 4WD drive between Timbuktu and Mopti I know which option I would take. That said there can be some dramas- check out my blog if you're interested in what can happen on the Niger.
