Chuuk Lagoon is considered by many to be the finest wreck diving site in the world.  As many as 65 Japanese ships and dozens of Japanese and US planes lie at the bottom of the lagoon as a result of the Americans’ Operation Hailstone in 1944.  Chuuk Lagoon was the base of the Japanese Naval Fleet at the time, and after the end of the two day battle, many of the Japanese warships and merchant ships had sunk to the bottom of the lagoon.

This makes for a spectacular dive site, as the ships still contain tons of items from the time they were sunk, and they have also turned into artificial reefs.  Many colourful sponges, coral, and fish have been attracted to, or have attached themselves to these wrecks.  There are many highlights, including the Shinkoku Maru, Fujikawa Maru, and San Franscisco Maru.
