The only geological architectural site in Micronesia. Plan on spending about 1 hour by car to drive to the trailhead which is on private property. You must pay the daily toll to the family that maintains the trail site, cost will vary depending. Once you gain access to the trailhead, plan on walking about 1-1.5 miles over watery terrain and shakey, questionnable coral bridges. If you manage to brave the hike, then you will be richly rewarded with the sheer size of Nan Madol. Some of the columnar basalt rocks that make up the main compound weigh several tons. Worth every minute of the journey. One important note, please go with a guide so that you avoid treading on sacred cultural sites. During high tide, you may have to swim a short distance to gain access to the compund.

The Nan Madol ruins are located on the island of Pohnpei in the Federated States of Micronesia. The once-city was built by the Saudeleur dynasty of kings who ruled Pohnpei over 500 years ago. The ruins are built of huge blocks of hexagonal basalt, stacked like firewood, built on platforms in the mangrove swamp and separated by canals. Most of the structures have fallen into ruin, but the main building is still impressive, 20' high walls and hundreds of feet on a side, covered in moss and lichen.
The ruins are about an hour's drive from Kolonia, the main town on Pohnpei. The trail to the ruins is in good shape, built of crushed coral and bridges through the swamp. The local families collect $4 to pass through their property.

Another wonder of the world... Kayaking through is the best way to see the whole thing, but you can still see parts by foot.
