Aug 20, 2009 It is a Buddhist Monastery located in the middle of Ulaanbaatar -- a very popular tourist attraction, but also frequently visited by locals for prayer. There are many different buildings, but three are "musts" to visit -- the largest is called Migjed Janraisig. It houses a gigantic Janraisig, the Bodhisattva of Compassion. The statue is over 26 meters tall and is made of copper and guilded in gold. Next to it are two smaller buildings. They are two schools with monks who are more than willing to speak with visitors. I had a local translator and so was able to ask many questions. The Monastery is free for locals, but there is a charge for foreigners. The ticket sellers walk around, so I guess you might be able to avoid them, but I was approached at the entrance to Migjed Janraisig, and I noticed another man at the entrance to the main gate. I can't recall how much I paid...it must have been around US$5... For me, the most fascinating scene was the long telephone pole like tree located in the middle of the Monastery. It is believed that when the Monastery burned down last time, that tree was the only thing left standing. And so I found many people circling the tree and whispering prayers into its cracks. Nov 8, 2009 Stop here for a peaceful getaway from the cityscape to take in the serenity that emanates from within the gates. Beautiful Chinese-looking architecture.
