Gorkhi-Terelj National Park is a one of the the main national parks of Mongolia.  Within the park are a Terelj Settlement, horse and camel rentals, Khagin Khar Lake - a 20 metre deep glacial lake, the Yestii Hot Springs, rivers, numerous bears and over 250 species of birds.

The park is popular for hiking, camping in gers  (a type of felt tent), for rock climbing (with two famous formations: Melkhii Khad - Turtle Rock, and Old Man Reading a Book), and just to appreciate the vast wilderness and beauty of the park.  Within the park is also the Khentii Mountain Range, within which is the rumoured birthplace of Genghis Khan.  Within the park is also the Gandan Monastery from which you can get great panoramic views of the park.

Getting there:
About 42km away from Ulaanbaatar.  To get there by road, follow the main paved road #A0501 east.  Turn left after about 37km to follow the branch #A24.  The park territory stars after crossing the Tuul river.

This is a really must if you are going to Mongolia! To not see the country side is like be in NY and not see the Satue of Liberty! The country side of Mongolia is outstanding! To live in a traditional ger (yurt) and drink the traditional milok tea is an amazing experience! Here you can also hike wherever you want, since noone owns anything in Mongolia! And when your feet are tired, you can take a horse ride! This is one thing that I always will remember, since it was such a great experience and such a peaceful place to be at! Unfortunately some of the ger's (yurt's) have electricity, and that removes a little of the feeling, but it's still amazing! Just about an hour east of UB city!

Easy access / proximate to Ulaan Baator and with great Mongolian scenery of rocky plains and jagged monoliths jutting from the earth. Look carefully and you'll see grounhogs popping up everywhere! ...you can really appreciate the challenges of the nomadic lifestyle when you are in Terelj. Kinda touristy, though, and there is even a golf course in/beside the national park(?!), yikes!

Beautiful park within driving distance of Ulaan Baatar. Stay in a traditional ger. Go for a walk or a horseback ride through the countryside. The area is lovely. Time to relax and take it easy for a little bit surrounded by nature.
