Thought to be built between the 5th and 6th century, Shwedagon Pagoda is Yangon and possibly Myanmar's most famous landmark. The top of the pagoda is built with solid gold, and adorned with an 86 carat diamond. It is a major destination for travellers and monks alike.
It is worth seeing Shwedagon Pagoda during the day and again at night when it's lit up.

One could spend hours watching old monks, young businessmen or timid couples, all here for the same reason: raw spirituality, oozing out from every stone, jewel and golden beam! Get there an hour or two before sunset, and find a nice spot from which to let it soak in: the razing rays of the sun falling on myriads of reflecting surfaces will brighten even the most cynical.

The history of Yangon is intertwined with the history of the Shwedagon Pagoda. Wherever you may be in Yangon, in the busy town center, the new towns of the east, the industrial zone of the west, the paddy fields of the north, the golden form of the Shwedagon can be seen on the skyline rising above the foliage of the tropical trees.

Shwe Dagon is just redonkulus. Most amazing sight in SEAsia.. Angkor WHAT??? Nooo.. it was nice, sure, but Shwedagon is godlike. 53 tons of gold leaf, thousands of precious gems, hundreds of local folk worshipping the damn thing round the clock? I'd give it like, 6 stars

The temple was amazing in the early evening, just at sunset and right after. It felt like being in a small town there were so many locals there praying and hanging out. Unfortunately it is under construction right now, but it is still really wonderful!!
