Situated at the site where the first European explorers landed, the Cape Cross Seal Reserve is a breeding area for between 80,000 and 100,000 of the Cape Fur Seals.

Cape Fur Seals are the largest of nine species of fur seals, and are in fact actually a type of sea lion.  The males arrive to the reserve in October to stake out their territories.  The females arrive in November, the pups are usually born between late November and December.  The males usually have harems of 50 females to a male.  Watching the breeding and birthing process is quite a sight, though the whole area can be quite a smelly encounter!  !

It is quite impressive to see so many seals at one point. But be aware that it smells AWFUL! :)

Great spot with incredible numbers of these cute, but very smelly animals.

Honestly, the vilest smell I have ever encountered. Take a mask.
