Spitzkoppe, known also the "Matterhorn of Namibia", are a group of bald granite peaks in the Namib desert between Usakos and Swakopmud.  Rising up to a peak of 1784 metres (5857 feet), the peaks form a sharp contrast against the surrounding plains.  These structures are old - more than 700 million years old, and form interesting shapes that reflect against the sunlight in vivid colours of saffron, ochre, browns and greys, making the whole area a photographer's haven.  Nearby is a minor peak - Little Spitzkoppe, which lies at an elevation of 1584 metres.  Also notable are the Pontok Mountains.

Naturally, rocky peaks piqued the interest of rock climbers, and attempts were made to summit the peaks.  It was scaled in 1946 after a several day summit, and the mountain gained a reputation of being a two to three day summit.  This shifted when a team climbed the peak within four hours.  Today, it's not considered that technically difficult, but the conditions and terrain are harsh, given its isolate location, the desert heat and the lack of water.

Within the region are also Bushman paintings.  Growing in the area are poison trees that Bushmen use to poison their arrows.

Bush camping, great rock formations and the big wide outdoors. If you are an avid photographer my tip is- the place takes the best long exposure night shots! Take a few hours for some bush walking to take in the views, and snap a few pictures, its very hard to take a bad picture here! Some great climbing, but the whole place is fairly isolated.
