Fish River Canyon, carved out by the Fish River (the longest river in Namibia), is situated in the eastern Naukluft Mountains.  It is the largest canyon in Africa, and one of the largest in the world, measuring a total of 100mi (160km), and up to 27km wide and 550 metres deep.

The water volumes of the river have slowed to a trickle in modern times, and in dry season, the river can become a long chain of pools.   Despite the destitute appearance, a variety of wildlife and plants can be found, including the Quiver Tree - Namibia's national tree.

A popular activity around the canyon is to hike, and a number of trails are available.  A permit is required for some of the hikes.

A number of airstrips are available, including at Ai-Ais, Canyon Nature Park, Seehiem, and near Grunau.

Beautiful place, stay at Hobas campsite rather than Ai Ais as you're much closer to the awesome viewpoint and the starting point of the hike.
Also a 4x4 is recommended if you got the cash as thems some bumpy gravel roads!

We stayed at a campsite near the top. Great views. Just watch out for the bugs if you plan to have a dinner under the stars along the canyon.
