Elephants
At the Elephant Breeding Center, 4km west of Sauraha, elephants are bred and trained. The best time to visit is in the afternoon when the elephants are fed. The Elephant Breeding Centre of Sauraha is a great tourist attraction is said to be one of the only 3 such centers in the world. Officially started in 1989, this centre had 5 Stud Bulls and 15 females and 6 babies (totaling 26) in 2001. In August 2006, there were 19 male/female adults and 15 baby elephants (all together 34). They are not used for work.

Early one morning we went to see the elephants in the elephant breeding center in Chitwan National Park. We wanted to get there before the crowds, and it turned out to be the perfect time to go! We were there all by ourselves and got pretty up close and personal with some greedy baby elephants who were very interested in the cookies we had for them! The adult elephants are very aggressive so each of them are chained to poles in the yard (though I imagine if they really wanted too they could get out pretty easily!), but the baby's are free to wander up to the fence so that you can pet and feed them. They were pretty loving, but I have a feeling they were only using us for our cookies! :)
