Do a self-guided walking tour of the old parts of town beyond and including Mangal Bazaar/Durbar Square. The residential courtyards and many temple complexes are active and fascinating. You can enter the garden courtyard of the Keshab Narayan Chowk, now the museum, without paying entry fee to enjoy an quiet oasis from the touristy hubbub outside the walls.
