About Fort Oranjestad
The Dutch command post of Fort Oranjestad (Fort Oranje) is located in the center of Oranjestad and was built after the capture of St. Eustatius in 1636 on French foundations that were started in 1629. It is a nicely preserved cliffside fort that contains cannons, triple bastions, and a beautiful cobblestone courtyard. The courtyard also has a memorial that commemorates the fort’s salute of the American vessel Andrew Doria in 1776, which was the first salute to the United States by a foreign power.
