The Simon Doncker Museum (St. Eustatius Historical Foundation Museum) gives an excellent overview of the history of St. Eustatius.   It is located in the home of Simon Doncker – a wealthy merchant of the 1700s.  The colonial-era style of the house has been maintained and contains a number of colonial artifacts and exhibits on the colonial history of Statia/St. Eustatius and the people of the island.  There is also a gallery containing information and artifacts from the pre-Columbian period, where the Saladoid Indians lived on the island from around 1000 B.C. to 1000 A.D.   Other information can be found about slavery and maritime history.
