This reserve is home to some of the largest remaining kauri trees in all of NZ.  This includes Tane Mahuta, the alrgest kauri tree in NZ, which is estimated to be over 1200 years.

There are not many of the old Kauri trees left who count to the oldest trees on earth. They grow really slow therefore it took hundreds and hundreds of years to get such an impressing Kauri forest like that one. Tane Mahuta is said to be the tallest/biggest and it's name means god of the forest. It's age is estimated between 1250 and 2500 years. To stand next to these trees you feel so small and unimportant... real magic!

One of the few places to see the kauri trees that used to cover New Zealand. It is fascinating to step into the forest here and feel you have been transported to another time when the trees were enormous and moa still roamed the land.  Tane Mahuta, the biggest of the trees is awe inspiring.
