Feb 1, 2009 Murupara is located southeast of Rotorua , on the outskirts of the Urewera National Park and on the banks of the Rangitaiki River in a remote part of the country. The Murupara area has great scenic beauty, and this is certainly the place to come to get back to nature. Urewera National Park is 212,627 hectares and is the largest, untouched national forest in New Zealand. There are plenty of activities to do in the forest, bush, streams and rivers of the National Park, including fishing, horse riding and walking. Activities in Te Urewera National Park Tracks and walks The park has an extensive track system but perhaps the best known and the best developed is the Lake Waikaremoana Track, one of New Zealand's Great Walks. Huts are situated along the 46 kilometre track; most can also be accessed by boat. Shorter walks are also available including one up to the idyllic Lake Waikareiti. Take a closer look at Lake Waikareiti by hiring a dinghy from the Aniwaniwa Visitor Centre (private craft are not permitted). There are areas of private Maori land within the park. In most cases you are welcome to pass through but please stay on the marked tracks. Related Links
