It is a great beach for surfing; however, you need to pay attention to the lifeguard flags and swim within the flags, because like most good surf beaches, there can be a problem with rip tides and undertow. Sandy beach but no food facilities on beach so bring your own and clean up when done. If surf is not up at Waimarama, try Ocean Beach which is only a few miles further up the coast. If you contact the local marae, they will sometimes explain the history and culture of that area. Interesting stuff! :)
