Karekare & Piha beach are known for their dangerous currents as well as for their world class surf. The sand is of vulcan origin and therefor black. Here they filmed scenes for 'The Piano'. Close by you find a wonderful waterfall.

Karekare beach is as beautiful as seen in 'The Piano' film of Jane Campion. I was amazed by the roughness and wild nature. It is good for surfing as well but known to be dangerous you better listen to the life guards! Quite a few draws every year because people overestimate themselves.
