The only mainland breeding colony for Royal Albatross in the southern hemisphere, this is THE place to go to see big birds. Albatross have wing spans of up to 3 metres and spend virtually all of their time at sea, except when breeding.

This is the only albatross colony attached to land IN THE WORLD. Your experience really depends on what kind of tour you take, and if the winds are high and what season it is. the website has everything you need to know, but I would recommend the tour of the colony itself and the fort, because it's great being able to mix a little bit of wildlife with history. A warning, though, the fort tour probably isn't best for elderly people. There are a lot of steep paths, steps and tight spaces.

Very impressive birds and great views from atop the cliff where the viewing platform is. You have to stay in a special enclosure to not disturb the birds, so photos are a bit tough, but if you linger outside on the trail up to the enclosure long enough you may get some clear pictures as the Albatross fly by overhead.

It's a bit expensive, but it's great to see the albatrosses so upclose. They're pretty amazing and fly really close to the observation point. If you think you can see the same from the carpark, you're wrong!

You dont understand the size of an albatross until you see them in this breeding colony! Really neat.
