An absolute highlight. I went in November, which is a good time. I was able to swim with hundreds of dolphins. The water is freezing and takes your breathe away at first, but in no time at all, you can adjust. They estimated there were 500 to 600, and gave tips on how to attract the dolphins. It was suggested that I go first thing in the morning (e.g 5:30 am) since the winds are usually calmer. I stayed at a BB the night before and booked the train/ferry from Wellington to Christchurch where they even allow for a one night stop in Kaikoura.

I was there to whale watching... And we saw one sperm whale for about an hour, after that the skipper took us to a site to see a major dolphin colony! it was amazing! A must in NZ!!!!
