Blowhole
Formed out of columns of limestone that resemble stacks of pancakes, the seawater swells rush through the underground channels and up through the blowholes, creating a spectacular effect.

It's a must see in new zealand! But watch out for the tour busses. You can also stay overnight in the beach hostel in punakaiki, its a great place. There is not much of a 'city'life, haha. But its beautiful there. You can walk along the beach when nobody is there. ( And not many people now, that you can find these special rock formations also just along the beach! I took some great pictures there!) You can also take a kayak and peddle along the river into the national park. Its a '' jurrassic park' kind of tropical forest.

As far as rocks and blowholes go - this place is definitely above average. The trail along the coast is very easy and has some fun bridges and lookout points where you can see the surging tides and waves crashing into the rocks. Timing your photos to catch a big blowhole explosion can be fun too. Some interesting flora in the area as well, and the pancake layered rocks are truly weird.

Yep, pancake rocks really rule and there are hundreds in Hokitika. This is basically why you go there, so not much surprise here. Yet, there is a little extra with blowholes and everything, these places where sea water breaks inland due to underground connecting tunnels. Lodgings nearby are good and it seems to be a nice place for biking.

Gorgeous scenery, whether you're looking AT the rocks and blowholes or FROM them, towards the rest of the coast. I'd recommend visiting somewhat early in the morning, as there's less people there and the angled sunlight makes for some spectacular photography.

Make sure you see the blow holes at high tide, beacause at low tide you can only see the pancake rock formations.
