Banzai Cliff is notable as the spot where hundred of Japanese civilians leapt to their deaths to avoid capture by the Americans in 1944.  The Americans had been portrayed as cruel torturers, so it was considered better to jump off these 80 foot high cliffs to the jagged rocks and waters below rather than be tortured.  The civilians screamed “tenno heika banzai” or “long live the Emperor” while jumping.

There are a number of memorials and plaques commemorating the site, including a statue of the Peaceful Goddess of Mercy, and a low fence at the edge of the cliffs.
