Modern Architecture
This modern cathedral was inspired by the small "Hoya" peak that can be seen from Sommaroy (Summer Island) about a 40 minute drive out from Tromso.  Since it was built during the cold war, the bottom levels were made into a bomb shelter.  The stain glass window was added afterwards (something the architect was not happy about).  Today it is possible to catch classical music concerts in the cathedral - the midnight sun concerts (held at midnight) are very popular.

Getting there:
This cathedral is located on the mainland just south of Tromso Island, right as you get off the main bridge.  Take bus # 20, 24, 26 or 28 to get there.

I would say this cathedral is best appreciated from the outside. This is where it is unique, with it's external structure looking like an iceberg or snow-covered mountain. We caught a very nice afternoon concert put on by a trumpetist, an organist, and solo signer. It was nice and relaxing.

Very interesting architecture to see and photograph. Also they performed a beautiful concert with organ and singer which is nice to listen to if you have the time. Otherwise I would recommend atleast snapping a few photos as this building has a very central visible presence in Tromso.

Took a tour of the city which included a 'drive by' of the Cathedral - from the outside it is more impressive from a distance! We also took a cable car ride to the tope of the mountain which provided a great view of the city.

One of the most striking buildings in Norway, the Arctic Cathedral is not technically a cathedral. Worth a visit, especially on your way to the Cable Car ride or on the way back.
