Situated at an elevation of 8,612 metres (28,253 feet), K2 is the second highest mountain in the world, and also considered by climbers to be the ultimate climb.  It is technically more difficult than Mount Everest, with extreme stormy weather, steep exposed surfaces, and  difficult stretches.  For the longest time, K2 was considered unclimbable.  Multiple expeditions were attempted from 1902 onwards, and it was only in 1954 that the mountain was successfully summitted.

K2 is so named due to the designation given by Thomas Montgomery, K meaning Karakoram, and 2 being the second peak listed.  It is the only major peak has kept the surveyor's notation as its common name.

K2 is situated in the Himalayan range on the border between Gilgit-Baltistan in Pakistan and Xinjiang (Uyghur Autonomous Region), China.  It is possible to reach the K2 base camp on various trekking routes.

The base camp 5200 m, takes some 17 to 19 days trekking up and down and it's an itinerary with stunning views of the mountains of Karakoram.
