If You are going to visit Peruvian part of Amazon jungle it;s the best point to start. There are only to ways to reach it: 1. By river (but it takes so long and almost nothing to see on the way), 2. By plane from Lima or Pucalpa. One way ticket Lima-Iquitos costs around 90-100 USD, You can purchase it directly in the airport. Do not be afraid to buy tickets from the people that offer them at the entrance to the departure terminal. It's sometimes cheaper than to buy in ticket office. From Iquitos You can easily find diferent ways to see wildderness of Amazonia. 3 days in very basic lodge with transportation, local spanish speaking guide and meal included You can find for 100-130 USD per person.

The start of the Amazon jungle from the Peru side. Belen market is a must to visit! We stayed for 4 nights in a lodge 2hrs away by speedboat and it was an experience of a lifetime! Iquitos itself is a safe city, having lots of hotels / hostels. The one we stayed at is called Flying dog. Good value for money, excellent staff!

One of my top 3 moments in Peru. Never thought it could be this great. Things i had only seen in national geographic, were in front of me and i could even feel them and touch them...
