Sacsayhuaman
About Sacsayhuaman
These zigzagged stone walls are some of the best surviving examples of advanced Inca stone-masonry in all of the Andes. Massive granite rocks have been carved to fit each others' edges perfectly - ingenious techniques were used to lower a rock on top another. Much of the original ruins were plundered by the Spaniards who recycled the stones to form foundations for several structures erected in the center of Cusco. Historians are still not sure of what specific purpose Saqsayhuaman would have serve during the time of the Incas.

Jul 2, 2009 Visited it on our first day in Cusco. 10 minutes by taxi from the city center. The site looks amazing. The return was a 30 minute walk. We stopped at a small grocery/cafe place to enjoy a cuscena beer, while the sun was setting above the city. One of the trip's highlights... Dec 26, 2008 Sacsayhuamán is super impressive between the symbology of the Incan design and the gigantic slabs of rock that are fitted seamlessly and without mortar next to one another, withstanding centuries of earthquake tremors. Wow! Nov 29, 2008 Please, walk up to Sacsayhuaman... they will tell you that you need a half-a-day-tour, but you will enjoy it much more by yourself... and if you really need a guide, you will find one there.
