Oct 9, 2009 The Cordillera Huayhuash is only 30km long but is packed with stunning turquoise lakes, glaciers and snow-capped mountains. There are 7 peaks over 6000m including Yerupaja (6634m) Peru's second highest mountain, and Siula Grande (6356m) made famous by Joe Simpson in 'Touching the void'. Located further away from Huaraz it is consequently much less crowded than its more famous neighbour the Cordillera Blanca, but it is none less impressive. As a matter of fact the 12-day trek around this range is considered as the second most beautiful trek in the world, and Joe Simpson admitted that after 20 years of climbing mountains all over the world, the Cordillera Huayhuash remains the most stunning mountain range he has ever laid his eyes upon. So it is indeed impressive, and its remotness only adds to its appeal. The trek will take you through spectacular scenery climbing over many high passes, the highest one being Punta Cuyoq at 5000m high. Countless beautiful lakes in shades of azure, emerald and turquoise dot the landscape, as well as fabulous snow-capped mountains and glaciers. The trek is not that easy, but if you are properly acclimatized it won't be too hard. I simply adored it and would recommend it to anyone. Related Links
