The park was established in 1975 to protect the unique and diverse flora and fauna found in the mountain range. It was declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1977, on account of the extraordinary native plants and animals, including such exotic and endangered species as the giant Puya Raimondi plant, queñual tree, ichu grass, spectacled bear, viscacha, vicuña, taruca, puma, Andean fox, mountain caracara, several species of hummingbirds and the emblematic Andean condor. In 1985, it was given World Heritage Site status thanks to the 33 archaeological sites inside the park, which date back to the Chavin, Recuay and Huari cultures. Payment Accepted:

Dec 18, 2011 The place to be for alpinism and mountaibiking. You can discover the cordilla blanca and the cordilla negra (4500m) by bike. The downhill tracks are wicked! Don't be affraid to fall because it will defenitly happen ;) The town of huaraz is a nice town with not much tourism as in the touristic places as Cuzco or Lima. Most tourist takes the route to the south of peru. Sep 23, 2011 I did the Lauguna 69 trek in Huaraz. It was a day trek going up to 4600m above sea level. The trek was hard but well worth the views and seeing the beautiful lake at the top Aug 4, 2011 One of the most beautiful places in Peru - must see this! It's so different that everybody can find something interesting for him/her.
