Agricultural Terraces
Traditional Village
This beautiful, hilly island is home to a Quechua-speaking people with a very specific way of life and set of traditions.  There are no vehicles or paved roads on the island, and electricity was only was introduced in the 1990s and remains limited.   The men on this island wear tight red caps, black pants and elegant waist-coats, and are almost always knitting as they walk around the island.  The women wear embroidered blouses and many-layered skirts.  The island itself offers beautiful scenery of Lake Titicaca with the Bolivia's Cordillera Real mountain range in the background.  There are some agricultural terraces built during Inca times on the island's hill slopes.

Getting there:
This island is located about 40 kilometers east of Puno on Lake Titticaca.  Several tour agencies operating out of Puno offer tours to the island.  It takes about 2 hours to get there by boat from Puno.

This island is a small high-altitude lake paradise. With the sun gleaming off the lake below and Bolivian mountain range in the background, I could have easily "gone savage" and lived here with the locals for a year or two. The island is very hilly, so I ended up doing a fair bit of relaxed hiking around the island that left me feeling very satisfied with my day. The people of the island are very laid back and very pleasant to be around - not once was I harassed by touts during my visit (which can be a welcome change when traveling in Peru).

My youngest son and I spent a day on Lake Titticaca and Ilsa Taquile. We were both delighted with the beauty of the island and the friendly Peruvian people. We were fortunate enough to visit during a festival and found it great fun. I think it would be nice to spend a a couple of days on the island. Good Journeys!

Try a homestay on Isla Taquile - it' s fun for both sides. When hosts gather their guests it can be a wild party including dressing up locally!

It's written Isla Taquile, not Ilsa Taquile.
