Originallt build in 1656, it had to be rebuilt twice, first in 1844 when it was destroyed by a fire, and second in 1868 after being severly damaged during an earthquake. This Cathedral is very large with an impressive exterior, the only one in all of Peru that span an entire side of a plaza. It's interior is very spacious and uncluttered. It is one of less than 100 cathedrals to house a basilica entitled to display the Vatican flag in the entire world (located just to the right of the alter). This cathedral also houses the largest organ in all of South America. Concerts are given 2 to 3 times a month.

This cathedral is located on north side of Arequipa's Plaza de Armas in the center of town. It is well within walking distance of most other interesting attractions in the city.

The embiance inside the Cathedral is incredible. The dominant color is this warm orangish-yellow painted on the walls, and there are al sorts of shrine-like nooks in the walls containing glass-covered scuptures of various Christian figures. I spent an hour in there sitting down and just relaxing in there. What a great space.
